Abstract

Plants and plant-based products such as secondary metabolites are the basis of modern pharmaceuticals that are current in use today for various diseases. The objective of the study was to explore the bioactive components and TLC finger printing of methanolic leaf extract of Carissa carandas. The preliminary phytochemical screening of methanolic extract showed the presence of secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, phenols, tannins, phytosterols, terpenoids, quinones and carbohydrates. Quantitative analysis of the extract indicates that the leaf extract was rich in phenols, tannins and flavonoids than the other plant parts. TLC finger printing profile of extract of Carissa carandas showed presence of different compounds with distinct Rf values with different solvent systems.
