CLINICAL AND RADIOLOGIC EVALUATING OF BREAST HYPERECHOIC LESIONS USING ULTRASONOGRAPHY FOR DETECTION OF MALIGNANCY

Abstract

Background Abstraction: Previously, benign lesions on ultrasonography were believed to be hyperechogenic lesions. This idea has evolved recently, since several malignant breast lesions that seemed hyperechogenic on ultrasonography have now been shown to be malignant upon histopathologic investigation.

Aim: In cases with core needle biopsies guided by ultrasonography, the clinical presentation, frequency, and related imaging findings of hyperechoic malignant breast lesions were evaluated. Additionally, ultrasonographic features that aid in the prediction of a hyperechoic lesion's malignant nature were assessed. Methods: Of the 2255 individuals, 2168 underwent an ultrasonographically guided core needle biopsy. Among all the evaluated patients, the hyperechoic carcinomas were found using a core needle biopsy guided by ultrasonography. Six ultrasound pictures were compared in instances of high-risk and malignant lesions to identify imaging malignancy predictions. The following sonographic findings were evaluated: margins, echogenicity, posterior acoustic characteristics, direction, vascularity, and form. The statistical analysis was completed before formulating the results.

Results: 2168 participants had a total of 2255 ultrasonographically guided core needle biopsies performed; of them, 52.01% (n = 1173) had benign lesions, 40.97% (n = 924) had malignant lesions, and 7% (n = 158) had high- risk lesions. The analysis of the picture revealed that, out of the 2255 lesions evaluated in total, 13 females had 0.57% (n=13) of the lesions to be hyperechoic. Nine malignant lesions, or 0.97% of the total, had hyperechoic lesions. 62.5% (n=5) of the study participants with benign lesions and 37,5% (n=3) of the individuals with malignant lesions had circumscribed margins, whereas 100% (n=5) of the patients with non-circumscribed margins had them (p=0.007). Regarding the morphology of the lesions, 87.5 (n=7) of the benign lesions had irregular/lobular borders (p=0.002), compared to 100 (n=5) of the malignant lesions.

Conclusion: The current investigation finds that the prevalence of hyperechoic breast lesions on ultrasonography is lower, at 0.57% (n=13) lesions. Thus, in sonography, hyperechoic breast lesions are less common. Nonetheless, it is important to consider the possibility of cancer if these hyperechoic lesions are seen.
